Behavior charts can be utilized with students who may be having difficulty choosing positive behavior choices and are thriving on the attention they receive through negative behaviors. It is important to be careful when using charts with children who are highly inattentive or hyperactive because they may truly have great difficulty regulating their behavior and failure on the chart could impact self-esteem. If this is the case, they should first be explicitly taught strategies and praise should be given for effective utilization of those strategies. For example, a student who quickly becomes frustrated and shuts down may be able to earn a point/sticker each time they effectively request a break or help and ultimately complete their work.
